The journey to a labyrinth on campus began in 2014 when a group of students, faculty, and staff discussed the possibility of developing a space on campus dedicated to reflection. Throughout spring 2015, the group researched labyrinths, talked to other institutions that have labyrinths on campus and also met with the creators of the labyrinth at Lichgate on High Road. In summer 2015, the group connected with staff from Facilities to discuss possible spaces for a labyrinth on campus. In fall 2015 the Labyrinth Working Group began regular working meetings to develop a design and proposal. This group consisted of staff and faculty from Facilities — both Grounds and Planning, the Center for Leadership and Social Change, and Campus Recreation. The group also consulted with University Housing, the Office of Accessibility Services, and the academic departments adjacent to the proposed site. In April 2016, the Labyrinth Working Group presented to the Campus Aesthetics Committee and received support for moving forward with design and construction at the current site on Call Street between the Department of Psychology and the College of Medicine. The 2016 – 2017 academic year was dedicated to refining the plans for the labyrinth. Most recently the Master Craftsman Studio has joined the Labyrinth Working Group to develop signage and an art feature for the center for the labyrinth. From this beginning, the process of developing a labyrinth for FSU has been collaborative drawing in staff and faculty from across divisions and departments.
